Great Madurai, Cooked in Toongabbie

In Tamil, "Maa" also means Great — and MaaMadurai celebrates Great Madurai.

Our Story

MaaMadurai brings the great flavours of Madurai to the heart of Toongabbie, right here in Portico Plaza, opposite Woolworths. From fluffy idly and crispy dosai to kothu parotta, Seeraga Samba mutton biryani and Madurai Jigarthanda, every plate is our way of saying "Vaanga, Sapdalam" — come, eat with us.

We started this restaurant to recreate the warmth of the temple city in Sydney, serving authentic Tamil unavu made the way our families enjoy it back home. Madurai is called the city that never sleeps, and its food streets are the reason — griddles going past midnight, parotta being smashed in rhythm, jigarthanda glasses stacked at the counter.

In our kitchen you will find those same Madurai icons: kothu parotta smashed on a hot tawa, kari dosai rich with mutton gravy, Seeraga Samba biryani simmered slowly, and street favourites like Ulundu Vadai and Jigarthanda. Every dish is cooked fresh, with curry leaves, ghee and freshly ground masala.

Our Values — Virundhombal

In Tamil culture, virundhombal — the cherishing of guests — sits at the centre of the Great Madurai experience. The Thirukkural reminds us of it in its chapter on hospitality, விருந்தோம்பல், Kural 82.

"விருந்து புறத்ததாத் தானுண்டல் சாவா
மருந்தெனினும் வேண்டற்பாற் றன்று"

"Though food of immortality should crown the board,
Feasting alone, while guests go unfed, is abhorred."

Thirukkural, Kural 82

We live by this kural — no guest should feel like an outsider. From the first "Vanakkam" at the door to the last sip of filter coffee or masala tea, we want you to feel like you are eating at your amma veedu, your mother's home.
